The Teaching Assistant Experience [volunteering]

Volunteer English Teaching Assistants are talented undergraduates and recent graduates who visit us from reputable British universities that VolunTeach Peru partners with, for a short period of time. They must be native speakers of English or have excellent and fluent communication skills in this language, as well as to have the ability to deal with cultural differences and all school students ages (from 5-17 years old).

Volunteering is a decision made by each individual freely. At VolunTeach Peru, we organize an affordable and unforgettable volunteering Teaching Assistant Experience combined with a rewarding cultural exchange experience, which will not only impact schools’ students, teachers and host families; but also the volunteers themselves.

The role of the volunteer English Teaching Assistant:

  • Help the English teacher plan the lesson

  • Help the English teacher prepare materials

  • Lead speaking, listening and reading activities

  • Use games connected to the lessons

  • Supervise pupils in the classroom

  • Work with small groups of children

  • Deliver presentations about your country

  • Encourage students learn about your culture

  • Organize the English week at school

  • Attend staff meetings

  • Act as a resource in the English lab

  • Occasionally go on school´s field trips

  • Motivate students to learn English

Person Requirements:

  • Native or fluent level of English language skills

  • University undergraduate or recent graduate (2 years limit)

  • Age limits: 18-24

  • Ability to work in a teams, flexibility, creativity.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Empathy. Enthusiasm to work with school children

  • To be mentally and physically fit

  • Sense of humour

  • Leadership, teamwork, collaboration, Interpersonal abilities.

*Knowledge of Spanish or teaching experience are NOT requirements.

*Non native speakers of English must submit IELTS (Academic) or CEP examinations results.

Programme Overview

  • Volunteering Days: Monday to Friday from 8am to 1pm.

  • Dates are available during the Peruvian Academic Year is run along the months of March and December.[Start dates in December, January, February and July are not available due to schools' summer and winter breaks. Contact VolunTeach Peru for alternative options.

  • Duration: 1 , 2, 3 or 4 months.

  • Volunteers are free on Fridays. This allows them to travel on the weekends or spend good quality time with their host families.
