Our goal is to make your experience unforgettable and meaningful for our pupils.
The Teaching Assistant Experience Programme is the only scheme which requires a fee to the candidate. It helps us to maintain full time support for all participants, since they apply until they go back home.
We look after and well arrange everything for you; not only at school but in other personal situations you might unexpectedly need support with when you are abroad. We are much more than a regular organisation, we are a family! This makes us unique and worthwhile.
We recruit up to 50 undergraduates every year under this scheme. The small programme fee helps us reduce your monthly stipends to the minimum, and cover within other costs the following services:
Placement in our partner schools
The position is voluntary language assistant and the schedule goes from Monday to Thursday from 8:00am to 1:00pm. If interested in getting involved in other activities like PE, science, music or drama, then you are welcome to do it.
The programme is available in the cities of Lima, Huaraz, Arequipa, Iquitos, Chiclayo, Cajamarca, Tarapoto and Piura.
Food and Accommodation provided by a host family
Schools recommend and help us recruit Peruvian host families that belong to their community. They must understand the importance of l learning English and the cultural exchange benefits they will get out of it. You will get the chance to learn about European and Peruvian cultural aspect, traditions and learn some of both languages (English and Spanish). Teaching assistants are expected to be treated as another family member at home.
VolunTeach Peru pays a USD$2,000 liability insurance for all candidates placed in our partner schools every year. UK universities strictly require this insurance to organisations abroad to cover their students while they are at schools.
You may have many questions before you arrive. You are more than welcome to ask about every little detail you would like to know about Peru, the school, teaching tips, your Peruvian family preferences or travel plans in South America. We reply messages in less than 12 hours and sometimes even instantly.
Regular contact with UK Universities
We are happy to provide candidates legal papers about VTP and fill out university forms. We do this to re-assure our commitment with them, their universities and the success of their experience in Peru.
Airport Pick-up and transfer
Don´t be scared. A VTP representative will pick you up from the Lima International Airport. We will take you either to our partner hostel (if your placement is not in Lima) or your host family house.
One-day sightseeing in Lima
The day after you arrive, we will take you on a tour around Lima, the historical city centre, enjoy a nice lunch and visit nice areas such as Miraflores and Barranco. You will meet the rest of teaching assistants who will do the programme with you during the sightseeing.
In-country acculturation and orientation seminar
It takes place in our house and gives you the comfortable and family warm environment you just need. This will help you questions you might still have before the placement starts. We provide the complete guidance regarding the experience and Peruvian cultural differences.
In-service Teaching training
Candidates get a 6 hours training before they start teaching. We provide them further advice on what their role will be in the classroom and what schools expect from them.
In-country support along your stay
You are not alone. There is always a vtp representative you can contact either online or on the phone. We are committed to help you anytime. We are just a phone call or e-mail away from you.
Charity project: We run a teaching charity project in Pamplona Alta II, a very disadvantaged area in the south of Lima where education is a priority and urgent necessity. We have been teaching around 50 children along the academic year since the last four years. We hope 50 more children will get access to our amazing lessons in 2016, thanks to the second classroom we look forward to start building. We strongly believe English is the key to obtain much better opportunities in life and why not to provide more children this tool for success!
One-free teaching training seminar in partner schools: They are delivered in the schools where the programmes take place. We would like our Peruvian teachers of English improve their teaching methodology.
We coordinate every single arrangement, with your university, host school and Peruvian family. The whole process takes us around 3 to 6 months before you arrive. The fee permits us to deliver this programme for free in our partner schools. Fees cover all administrative costs that we incur every month such as taxes, a lawyer, an accountant, promotional and marketing costs, teaching trainings, universities ambassadors in several cities throughout the UK, office supplies and logistical support.
Supervision at your host school
VTP visits its partner schools twice a year in all the cities where the programme is run. During the visits, we deliver information sessions to potential host families, interview them, train teachers, monitor and supervise the teaching assistants cooperation at school.
We are committed to make your experience as pleasant and as well organised as you would like it to be.
This programme is free of charge for our partner schools, voluntary and not a contract of work for you; the timetable you will get is some how flexible so you can travel around Peru on the weekends and/or spend some family quality time with them.
